This 1937 Mercedes 540K Cabriolet C is a wonderful older restoration of a very correct numbers matching car. It drives and handles superbly and is quite capable of keeping up with current traffic weather on the freeway or twisty mountain roads. It is as originally delivered with the exception that an electrically operated power steering system supplied by the Mercedes factory has been retrofitted to the car. Thought not used in normal driving; when parking or moving the car in tight quarters it reduces the steering effort dramatically.
Just over 400 540Ks in total were produced by Mercedes and of these just 32 cars received a Cabriolet C body. A majority of the Cab Cs had a rear body section that was designed with a humped back that was not considered particularly attractive. It appears that only 6-8 of the 32 cars received the much better looking slanted back that this car displays. A Sister to this car appears at the top of page 76 in Volume 1 of Jan Melins book Mercedes Benz, the supercharged 8 cyl cars of the 1930s.
As per its factory build sheet this 540k retains all its original major components and during recent service work it was determined that all sheet metal and structural wood appears to be original and still in excellent condition. A correct new convertible top was just installed and even the original wood top bows were in such nice condition {this was the 3rd top from new} that they were reused. This car was delivered when new to a UK based Owner through the Mercedes Distributor in Brussels Belgium. Though its early history at this time is not known in Jan of 1975 the car was sold through Specialty Car Sales Inc in Warrendale PA to Margaret B Cowan of Colorado and the Ownership history from that point on is known. The 540k has been recently serviced and test driven approximately 150miles. It comes with an original owners manual in pristine condition. This is a great addition to any collection.
