1952 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback: The Very First Production Bentley R-Type Continental and out of Single Family Ownership for Over 45 Years
This 1952 Bentley R-Type Continental is the very first production example to leave the factory and is in wonderfully original unrestored condition. Just out of 45 year single family ownership. Only the prototype examples preceded this particular R-Type Continental. The rolling chassis was constructed by Bentley in February of 1952 (the prototype car was completed in August of 1951 and retained by Bentley Motors until 1960). Like many other A-Series Continentals, this car was finished in right-hand drive and powered by a 4.5-liter engine mated with a floor-mounted gear change. Upon Completion, the chassis was sent to H.J. Mulliner, where it was given the fastback coachwork, designated by design number 7277. The car was given lightweight bucket seats and alloy bumpers. Custom features include the twin fog lamps, door pockets in the seat backs, rear defroster, and radio. It was also requested that the Bentley be delivered with a plain radiator shell, with no cap or mascot. Upon being returned to Bentley, the car was road-tested on May 14th of 1952. It was the subject of a 393-mile test at the MIRA Proving Groups. On June 4th, the car was shipped from Folkestone, England, to Boulogne, France, aboard the SS Maidstone. Two days later, the official French concessionaire Franco-Britannic Automobiles sold the Bentley to its first private owner, Andr Simon, who registered the car in Paris as '8 BH 75.' M. Simon retained BC1A for just one year; it was sold in 1953 to another Frenchman, M. Permanis. Ed Jurist of Nyack, New York, acquired the car in 1959. In June of 1959, the car was sold to its first private owner in the United States, Father Joseph Reagen. Jurist would later broker its sale to subsequent owners throughout the 1960s. In January of 1970, Jurist sold the car to Eric Weissberg of Brooklyn, New York. In 1974, the car was given a cosmetic freshening, which included refinishing the coachwork in Antelope Brown and trimming the interior in matching brown leather. Mr. Weissberg would retain the car for over 45 years. The car is currently in largely unrestored condition, still wearing its 1970s-era paintwork and upholstery.
