1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet
Chassis No. 180030N7515100
Handcrafted, Limited Produced Model, With Desirable Manual Transmission, Luxuriously Optioned from the Factory, Originally delivered in a Very Rare Color Scheme, Verified by Mercedes-Benz DataCard, Recent Summer 2016 Complete Mechanical Service, Among the Rarest and Most Sought After Examples of Mercedes Ponton Era
The 220S cabriolet was luxuriously appointed and offered many of the amenities associated with Mercedes-Benzs limited production 300 series. These included reclining seats in addition to interior brightwork and wood veneer trim. The exterior was distinguished by additional chrome beltline, while its top, unlike earlier Mercedes-Benz cabriolets, was nearly hidden below a boot cover, giving these cabriolets an almost roadster-like smoothness of line when open touring. Where the 220 sedans were dowdy and practical, the 220S cabriolets projected an image of subtle elegance. From 1956-1959 Mercedes-Benz would produce only 2,178 220S Cabriolets. It would join the ranks of limited productions cars such as the 220SE, 300SL and the 300S among others.
180030N7515100 was completed on December 16, 1957 in incredibly rare duotone Graphite Grey over Pearl Grey paintwork, with Red Leather upholstery. Today this Cabriolet makes an excellent candidate as the casual the weekend driver, displaying an older restoration. Coming out of long term storage this 220S is a great find and could benefit from minor cosmetics and light service. Care has been taken to preserve the originality of woodwork adorning the cockpit, complemented by original trim and glass. Spare assembly, jack and lug wrench remain within the luggage compartment. This S comes equipped with the more desirable standard, column-shift manual clutch, power-assisted brakes and steering. Other accessories include Bosch driving lamps, M-B 100,000km driving club plaque. A July 2016 service included new battery, tires, and entirely new braking system and mechanical tune-up. The 220S cabriolet is remarkably versatile as a runabout or tourer while best representing the Ponton era for Mercedes-Benz. These wonderful four-person open cars are easily driven, quite reliable and hold great potential for continued investment.
